The three main metabolic trends associated with cancer cachexia are: (1) lactate recycling between the liver and the tumoural mass, (2) lipid mobilization from adipose tissue, and (3) muscle waste basically caused by enhanced protein degradation. Figure 2.Main cachexia markers. Both circulating and tissular parameters can be used as a markers for cachexia. In addition, there are also non-invasive markers which may help to diagnose cancer-associated wasting. Figure 3.Cancer cachexia: factors involved. Cancer cachexia is a complex pathological condition characterized by many metabolic changes involving numerous organs. These changes are triggered by alterations in the hormonal milieu, release of different tumour factors and a systemic inflammatory reaction characterized by cytokine production and release. Figure 4.Catabolic mediators in cancer. Both tumour-derived and humoural (cytokines) factors are involved in mediating anorexia and metabolic changes, characteristic of the cachectic state. Figure 5.Cytokines can mimic most metabolic alterations. Most of the metabolic alterations present during cancer cachexia can be mimicked by pro-inflammatory cytokines. WAT: white adipose tissue. Figure 6.Interactions between PIF and pro-inflammatory (catabolic) cytokines. Both humoural (TNF and IL-6) and tumoural (PIF) factors have been shown to be able to activate intracellular muscle proteolysis by different mechanisms, possibly sharing common pathways. Figure 7.Metabolic targets of the different drugs employed for the treatment of cachexia. Therapeutical approaches to fight cachexia are based on either counteracting anorexia, by means of increasing food intake, or neutralizing metabolic abnormalities associated with the cachectic state. Among the optimal targets, blocking protein degradation in skeletal muscle is a promising strategy that will depend on the discovery of specific inhibitors of the proteasome system in skeletal muscle. Figure 8. Cytokine balance and the cachectic syndrome. The balance between pro-inflammatory (pro-cachectic), their soluble receptors and the anti-inflammatory (anti-cachectic) cytokines plays a key role in the development of the cachectic syndrome.

Yet ANOTHER SUPER-CARRIER BATTLE GROUP - the USS Abraham Lincoln - joins the USS Carl Vinson super-carrier battle group and the USS John C. Stennis super-carrier battle group in the area of the Straits of Hormuz along with at least three assault carriers battle groups with their large US Marine Corps amphibious forces and a French carrier battle group plus British air defense destroyers ...the Russians have a carrier battle group in Syria now also ~ link ~ This is the sign that events are beginning to come to a head. The US Navy has moved many of its capital ships into the war theater along with key NATO allies. Yet another USN super-carrier battle group is expected to be off Israel soon! Military officials said the USS Carl Vinson arrived in the Arabian Sea on Monday to replace the outgoing USS John C. Stennis carrier strike group, which Iran last week warned not to return to the Gulf after departing in late December.

The Stennis was due to return to its home port in San Diego but the Pentagon did not say when that would happen.

Another carrier strike group, led by the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, concluded a port visit to Thailand on Tuesday and was now in the Indian Ocean. It is on track to join the Vinson in the Central Command area of operations, which begins in the neighboring Arabian Sea.

INDIANA - The days of medical masks at airports and widespread panic may be coming back—that’s because at least 12 humans are believed to have been infected with a new strain of swine flu that’s not covered by this season’s vaccine. The new swine flu strain, H3N2v, has shown at least some potential for human-to-human transmission in those 12 individuals, which makes it especially dangerous. Between 2009 and mid-2010, more than 17,000 people died worldwide from the highly contagious H1N1 swine flu strain, leading the World Health Organization to call the strain a pandemic. The 12 people with the new swine flu strain live in Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Officials for the Centers for Disease Control say the sample size of H3N2 infections is too small to know whether it will pose a threat to the population at large. “It’s a very small sample and it’s geographically spread, which makes it more difficult to get a handle on it,” says Jeffrey Dimond, a CDC spokesman.

Concerning Fukushima Unit 4:

Recently discovered email between US NRC and IAEA, they knew that way back on March 22, 2011 that Unit 4's Spent Fuel Pool was boiling dry and sustained severe damage. On March 15 the Unit 4 Reactor Building exploded for reasons that we do not fully understand yet. Since all the core was in the Spent Fuel Pool, many have conjectured that the explosion was nuclear in nature.

COMMENT:

In the March 22 email messages between IAEA and US NRC, it was very clear that they did NOT know status. Understanding and Reporting Status is Job 1 in almost all industries. Tepco was hiding anything it knew and released only sketchy information.

Here is an excerpt from one of the email messages in the FOIA Response:

. . . . Also, I checked to see the status of the Bechtel shipment from Austrailia. I found the following in WIKI (!) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/fukushima_I_nuclear accidents On 22 March, the Austrailian Military flew in Bechtel-owned robotic equipment for remote spraying and viewing of the pool. . .

UNBELIEVABLE that the leading Regulators of Nuclear Power had to rely on Wikipedia to ascertain status!

March 23, 2011 - Suspect 3 Feet of Salt in bottom of Reactor Vessel- Spent Fuel Pool Lasted 3 Days!

In an interchange of email messages between NRC staff:

"I was in a meeting yesterday and we were told that it is suspected that there is 3 feet of salt in the bottom of the reactor vessel (I forget which Unit) from the seawater cooling"

AND

"Phil,

It’s steam all right & U3 SFP boil off is the best guess. The pools should have lasted min. 8 days (by the most conservative calcs I saw – 10 days is a better estimate) after the event before they got to the magic 50% covering of the fuel assemblies which gives you the Zirc oxidation & H2 liberation. I understand the guess is the pool lasted 72 hours – you can infer what happened.

The core is melted & the primary is full of sea water, so it could be coming off the hot primary containment?

But everyone is betting on SFP ………"

On March 14, when we were the ONLY media reporting that the Spent Fuel Pools are extremely significant and would be a major cause for Radioactive Release. The frustrating part of this is that I knew that there would be no quick remedy. Turns out that the NRC knew this too (but forgot to inform the Members of the Public who they pledged to protect)

Moderate earthquake shakes northeastern Japan

(CNN) -- A moderate earthquake rattled northeastern Japan Thursday, the Japan Meteorological Agency reported.

The 5.8 magnitude quake was centered about 120 kilometers (75 miles) southeast of Fukushima, the site of last year's historic 9.0-magnitude earthquake and tsunami that triggered a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant.

"This earthquake poses no tsunami risk," the agency's website said.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

Japan lies along the Pacific "ring of fire," an area of high seismic and volcanic activity stretching from New Zealand in the South Pacific up through Japan, across to Alaska and down the west coasts of North and South America.

COMMENT:

This is one of many quakes that recently registered greater than 5.0 right at Fukushima's coast line. As we discussed previously, flimsy make-shift systems that have been hastily thrown together are all we have to maintain any semblance of cooling/filtration/containment. One quake of sufficient size, WILL cause system failure and accelerated melting. I say "accelerated" because even with these systems, cooling, filtration, and cooling are completely inadequate to prevent melting and runoff of highly contaminated waste.
