Car Trip Check List

Drive on the top half of your fuel tank.

Make sure you have good tires. Snow tires if going thru snow country.

Get a mechanic to do a winter check before winter.

What if I get stuck?

Stay in the car. Only leave the car if help is visible in 1/8 mile or less.

Display a brightly colored cloth or other sign of trouble outside your car.

Turn on the car’s engine for about 10 minutes each hour. Run the heater and turn on the inside light when the car is running to help keep warm.

Beware of carbon monoxide poisoning. Clear the exhaust pipe of snow and if necessary open a downwind window for air.

Watch for signs of hypothermia. That includes loss of feeling and pale color in the skin.

To keep warm, do exercises, huddle together and use newspapers, maps and even inside car mats.

Wear loose fitting, layered, light-weight clothes. Store wool/wool blend blankets or similar blankets in vehicle at all times.

Layers can be pulled off to prevent perspiration which can quickly turn cold near the body.

Cover your mouth. That protects your lungs. Keep dry.

Stretch out before you start physical activity. That can help you avoid strain.

Shovel only what you can lift with ease. Go slow. If you feel yourself running out of breath, take a significant break.

In general you should take frequent breaks while shoveling especially if older.

Check the news or call friends for an idea of what shape the roads are in ahead of you.

If going on a long trip, check the weather for your destination and places along the way.

It could save frustration and even time to wait. Snow Plows could clear roads and sunlight may melt ice. Let a trusted friend know your route and ETA ( estimated time of arrival ) Call them when you arrive.

Slowly warm the persons body, starting with their torso. Warm up arms and legs last because stimulation of the limbs could send cold blood to the heart and cause heart failure.

Put the person in dry clothing and wrap their whole body with a blanket ( one reason to store wool/wool blend blankets and emergency mylar type blankets ) if possible. Use your own body to warm them.

Do not give them anything with caffeine or alcohol in it. Caffeine speeds up the heart and can intensify the effects of cold weather.

Alcohol slows down the heart and therefore also speeds up some effects of cold weather.

In April, 2007, Leuren Moret exposed the U.S. military’s illegal use of Depleted Uranium (DU) weapons in target practice in Hawaii, in violation of U.S. military regulations. The elevated radiation readings she recorded were carried by ABC-TV news in Hawaii on April 29 & 30, 2007.

Leuren Moret reported similar elevated radiation readings downwind from the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. on September 11, 2001. Two days after 9/11, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) confirmed that the crash site rubble was radioactive and that it was probably Depleted Uranium (DU) contaminating the Pentagon crash site rubble. The entry and exit holes through the Pentagon crash site were the signature of a kinetic energy penetrator, such as a Cruise missile, and the term “punch-out hole” was written by crash site investigators over the exit hole. This is a military term used for kinetic energy penetrators. Major Doug Rokke, former Director of the Gulf War I DU Cleanup Team, reported that an email from the Pentagon 30 minutes after impact confirmed a Cruise missile hit the Pentagon on 9/11.

Depleted Uranium and DU weapons are already prohibited as Weapons of Mass Destruction under existing international conventions and treaties, including the 1925 Geneva Poison Gas Protocol. According to an August 2002 report by the UN Sub-commission, laws which are breached by the use of DU shells include: “the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; the Charter of the United Nations; the Genocide Convention; the Convention Against Torture; the four Geneva Conventions of 1949; the Conventional Weapons Convention of 1980; and the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907, which expressly forbid employing 'poison or poisoned weapons' and 'arms, projectiles or materials calculated to cause unnecessary suffering'. All of these laws are designed to spare civilians from unwarranted suffering in armed conflicts."

Atomic weapons, Depleted Uranium poison gas weapons and the first Agent Orange prototype were developed in World War Two under the Manhattan Project to target civilian populations, for the specific purpose of depopulation. The global pollution of the atmosphere, with Depleted Uranium radioactive poison gas since 1991, is causing a global epidemic of chronic illnesses, which will contribute to extensive depopulation and ecological destruction. This is newly defined as Omnicide. Depopulation became the top U.S. National Security priority detailed in the “Global 2000” Report written by Henry Kissinger, Z. Brzezinski, Gen. Alexander B. Autism-Vaccine Link: Does It Really Exist?

Autism is a complex developmental disorder that severely impairs a child's ability to communicate and interact with other people. Although the precise cause of autism is unclear, a plethora of theories have been suggested. One theory suggests a genetic link, while another holds vaccines containing mercury as the culprit. Parents of autistic children are now seeking legal recourse on whether mercury in vaccines caused autism in their children.

Thimerosal is a preservative in vaccines that contains 49 percent ethyl mercury. Mercury is a known neurotoxin or in other words is a chemical that causes untold harm to the brain, especially a child's developing brain. Scientists thought that autism might be one such toxic manifestation of mercury in vaccines. In 2002, thimerosal was phased out of childhood immunizations mainly because the Public Health Service and the American Academy of Pediatrics advocated it.

However it is possible that the mercury in the vaccines administered to children before 2002 did play a role in the development of autism. In the present case Cedillo v. Secretary of Health and Human Services, the United States Court of Federal Claims in Washington is all set to hear data that vaccines containing mercury are a causal factor in autism.

The case will be followed very keenly because there are another 4,800 such cases pending before the court.

Autism-vaccine links emerged in the late 1990s when the State of California released a report suggesting a 273 percent increase in the number of persons with autism between 1987 and 1998, the New York Times reports. The cases of autism are definitely on the rise in American children, whether it is due to improved diagnosis or due to other factors remains unclear.

In 2004, the Institute of Medicine examined data on links between vaccines containing mercury and the incidence of autism and found no evidence linking thimerosal to autism. The Institute of Medicine's panel based its conclusions on five large studies conducted in United States, Denmark, Sweden and Britain in 2001. These studies examined thousands of children, but failed to find any link between autism and thimerosal.

The IOM report said it was an undisputed fact that high doses of mercury did cause substantial neurological damage. However no symptoms resembled that of autism, the report suggested. It added that genetics was the main causative factor as many studies had noted that autism started prenatally.

A review by the Environmental Working Group suggested that autistic children had a biomarker that rendered them susceptible to mercury and heightened their risk of developing the neurological disorder. The report cited a study by Dr. Jill James of the University of Arkansas School of Medicine, which found that children with regressive autism had high levels of oxidative stress, which made it hard for their bodies to get rid of mercury.

The study cited the following factors as well (as available on www.ewg.com)

* The indisputable toxicity of mercury to the brain, particularly the developing brain (Limke 2004, Clarkson 2002, Mahaffey 1999).

* Peer-reviewed reports showing that autistic children are extremely poor at ridding their bodies of mercury as measured by mercury hair levels (Holmes 2003).

* The recent finding that autism-like symptoms are triggered by thimerosal in mice with a predisposition to autoimmunity (Hornig 2004).

* The fact that the prevalence of autism in boys is four times that in girls, and that boys have elevated incidence of damage from mercury exposure in epidemiologic studies (Vahter 2002).

The study said that it did not find a credible link between mercury in vaccines and autism, but there was sufficient evident to suggest mercury played some role.

This theory was reinforced by a study in 2006 which showed that autism cases declined when mercury was banned from vaccines. Using data from CDC’s Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) and the California Department of Developmental Services (CDDS), lead authors David A. Geier, B.A. and Mark R. Geier, M.D., Ph.D found that autism rates hit a high of 800 in May 2003, but dropped to 620 in 2006.

The authors suggested that the 22 percent decline in autism cases was mainly due to the restriction of mercury in vaccines.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that one in every 150 children has autism and that 560,000 people aged till 21 in the United States have autism.

Experts have tried to dispute the vaccine-autism link by suggesting that children are naturally distressed by shots and that this is the age when autism is first diagnosed leading parents to believe that the vaccines cause it.

It will be interesting to see what the U.S. Court of Federal Claims rules in the autism-vaccine case pending before it. This ruling might set off a legal time-bomb if it decides that mercury in vaccines is indeed responsible for autism. However a battery of scientists is also ready to give the flip side of the opinion.

The case is expected to last for three weeks.

Israel's successful launch of the Ofek 7 on Monday should not be taken lightly. While Israel has proven numerous times that it has the ability to independently develop, manufacture and launch satellites into space, the timing of Monday's launch was difficult to ignore.

While Israel Aerospace Industries and the Defense Ministry made the last-minute preparations for the launch on Sunday, a diplomat with the International Atomic Energy Commission in Vienna revealed that Iran was operating an additional 300 centrifuges each week at its enrichment center in Natanz. At the same time, Israel is debating whether to renew peace talks or go to war with Syria, which is beefing up forces along the Golan Heights.

But beyond the contribution the new satellite will make to IDF operations and to the work being done at Military Intelligence, it also places Israel at the forefront of global satellite development.

Israel is one of seven countries with independent satellite launch capabilities and is part of an exclusive club that includes the United States, France, Japan, China, India and Russia.

The launching also comes at a time when there is a "race to space" taking place in the Middle East. Iran recently tried launching a satellite into space and Egypt is working on following Israel's suit.

In February, IAF chief Maj.-Gen. Elazar Shkedy warned that Israel will be facing a possible threat to its vital space-based assets within the coming decade for which it has to start preparing immediately.

The consequences are clear: While Iran already purchases images of Israel from civilian satellite companies, a successful independent launch by Teheran could spell even more danger for the Middle East and would mean that they have the ability to launch ballistic rockets into space and potentially intercept Western satellites.

Israel's space program began in the 1980s and since then, despite a number of failures and setbacks, the country has succeeded in launching close to 10 satellites into space, with an outrageously-small annual budget of around $50 million. In comparison, the US annually invests $50 billion in its space programs.

Despite the tiny budget, Israel has had some great successes and last year doubled the US in the number of academic articles Israelis wrote about space and satellites. Ofek 7, defense officials pointed out, would work in conjunction with Ofek 5, launched in 2004 and would grant the IDF the capability to use the satellites as tactical tools during operations and not just strategic tools that gathered intelligence and assisted Israel in assessing its neighbors' intentions.

But for Israel to stay ahead of the Iranians and the rest of the world, additional funds are needed to continue to develop space-based platforms and satellites. Leading the efforts is Maj.-Gen. (res.) Prof. Yitzhak Ben-Israel, head of the Israeli Space Agency.

"We need more funds," he told The Jerusalem Post on Monday. "While people around the country are proud that Israel has satellites in space, that is not enough and we need to begin to invest more in this field."

Ben-Israel has drafted a plan calling for an increase in the annual budget to $130m. that he says would return $2b. in revenue to the state in sales to civilian companies. He has, however, yet to hear back from the government, which he explains is preoccupied with other seemingly more pressing issues than outer space.

"We are in a good position," he explains. "But we could be much better."

Scientists working to build a life form from scratch have applied to patent the broad method they plan to use to create their "synthetic organism".

Dr Craig Venter, the man who led the private sector effort to sequence the human genome, has been working for years to create a man-made organism.

But constructing a primitive microbe from a kit of genes is a daunting task.

Dr Venter says, eventually, these life forms could be designed to make biofuels and absorb greenhouse gases.

The publication of the patent application has angered some environmentalists.

The Canada-based ETC group, which monitors developments in biotechnology, called on patent offices to reject applications on synthetic life forms.

The J Craig Venter Institute's US patent application claims exclusive ownership of a set of essential genes and a synthetic "free-living organism that can grow and replicate" made using those genes.

It has also filed an international application at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) which names more than 100 countries where the institute may seek monopoly patents.

'Gene kit'

Dr Venter's team intends to construct an organism with a "minimal genome" that can then be inserted into the shell of a bacterium.

By removing genes, one by one, from a bacterium called Mycoplasma genitalium they identified the minimum number of genes required for this particular organism to replicate, or reproduce, in its controlled environment.

They have been able to remove 101 of its 482 genes without killing the bacterium, meaning that 381 were required for replication.

But generating a man-made living organism from the bottom up requires much more than just its minimal genome.

For example, in order to get the genes to do something, there have to be chemicals to translate the genes into messenger RNA and proteins.

Scientists around the world have been wrestling with the task of generating a so-called free-living synthetic organism for years.

Environmental objection

The ETC Group says it will be writing to Dr Venter asking him to withdraw his institute's patent applications.

"We don't want to engage in a long-term legal strategy to slap down bad patents. These patents must be struck down before they're issued," said Hope Shand, a spokesperson for the group.

Jim Thomas, of ETC Group, added: "These monopoly claims signal the start of a high-stakes commercial race to synthesise and privatise synthetic life forms."

It said the company was pressing ahead with its work despite the fact the public had not had the chance to debate the "far-reaching social, ethical and environmental implications".

Dr Venter maintains that artificial life forms could produce solutions to global problems such as green sources of fuel and climate change.

The effort could result in "designer microbes" that produce biofuels such as ethanol, and hydrogen.

They could also be engineered to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.

Dr Venter first announced that scientists were working on creating synthetic life forms at a conference in California in 1999.

A device which is aimed at dispensing and collecting folded garments using radio frequency identification (RFID) in the medical sector has been developed, it was announced today.

Tagsys has launched the SC400 Smart Cabinet, which uses the technology to trace folded textile assets at all points of the supply chain and increase accuracy of inventory management.

It consists of a three-dimensional antenna design which works in conjunction with users' security identification passes and integrated RFID readers, enabling the cabinet to unlock the relevant compartment and allow the employee to retrieve the garments.

"The Smart Cabinet will be an invaluable method for hospitals to ensure 24-7 availability of clean garments and to reduce expenditures due to garment losses," said Rens Plandsoen, managing director of project partner LCT.

It is scheduled to be exhibited this week at the Clean Show 2007, an event focused on the areas of textile care, laundering and dry cleaning.

WASHINGTON — Regulators on Monday said Sanofi-Aventis' obesity treatment Acomplia may trigger suicidal behavior and other psychological side effects in some patients.

The Food and Drug Administration posted online its review of the drug _ deemed effective for losing weight _ ahead of a Wednesday meeting at which outside experts will vote on whether it should be approved. The agency does not have to follow the experts' vote, though it often does.

FDA is scheduled to issue its final decision on the drug July 27.

Based on clinical studies from the French drug maker, FDA said patients taking Acomplia daily showed significant weight loss after two years.

However, agency staffers raised concerns about an increased rate of psychiatric adverse events among patients taking Acomplia, including depression, anxiety and insomnia. About 26 percent of patients on Acomplia reported such events, compared with 14 percent of patients on placebo.

FDA also drew attention to a possible link between Acomplia and suicidal behavior. In studies of the weight loss drug, Sanofi reported one patient committing suicide and eight having suicidal thoughts. Among patients taking a fake pill, Sanofi reported two suicide attempts and five instances of suicidal thoughts.

Regulators also noted a slightly higher rate of dizziness and headache among Acomplia patients, at 27.4 percent, compared with 24.4 percent patients on placebo.

Wall Street considers Acomplia a potential blockbuster despite hitting several regulatory snags since Sanofi submitted it for approval in 2005. The company originally touted Acomplia as both an anti-obesity pill and an anti-smoking treatment.

Last February, however, the FDA rejected the company's application for the anti-smoking use and said it needed more information on Acomplia's psychiatric side effects before approving the drug to fight obesity.

The drug gained approval in the European Union soon after, but regulators there also did not approve the smoking use and limited approval to overweight patients who suffer additional health problems, including abnormal cholesterol and diabetes.

If approved in the U.S., Sanofi said it would market the drug under the name Zimulti, because FDA reviewers felt the name Acomplia could potentially mislead consumers.

Shares of Sanofi-Aventis fell 19 cents to $45.31 Monday in early trading.

Where the U.S. government has failed miserably to drive innovative and productive responses to climate change, such as technological solutions that could ultimately fuel the economy, states and now even cities are taking matters into their own hands.

Denver plans to penalizing heavy energy users, among other measures, with a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by the equivalent of taking 500,000 cars off the road.

Today, from the Rocky Mountain News:

“The new plan is aimed at making Denver a national leader in reducing gas emissions that have been linked to global warming, giving a major push to alternative energy, stepping up recycling and changing building codes to encourage energy conservation.”

Mayors of several major world cities, frustrated with national and global inaction, pledged last month to develop their own plans to combat climate change.

Meanwhile here in Phoenix, they just build more highways. Sooner or later, the “build more” mentality will have to give way to a “build smarter” approach as oil (and water) become more scarce, and the cities and states (and, cough-cough, nations) that shift gears now will be economic powerhouses, while the others will be left in the dust, or rather left to choke on their own exhaust.
