Canadian study linking H1N1 to seasonal flu shots is throwing national influenza plans into disarray and testing public faith in the government agencies responsible for protecting the nation's health. Distributed for peer review last week, the study confounded infectious-disease experts in suggesting that people vaccinated against seasonal flu are twice as likely to catch swine flu. The paper is under peer review, and lead researchers Danuta Skowronski of the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control and Gaston De Serres of Laval University must stay mum until it's published.

09/18/09 - Fears swine flu 'on the way back' Sir Liam Donaldson: "We might be beginning to see the beginning of this second peak" Swine flu looks to be on its way back, according to Sir Liam Donaldson, England's chief medical officer. Figures showed that there were an estimated 5,000 new cases in England last week - up from 3,000. It is the first increase since the end of July, but the levels are still below what would be expected in a bad winter. In Scotland, the numbers have nearly doubled to more than 6,000, although in Wales and Northern Ireland the figures are much lower.

09/16/09 - Influenza Vaccination During Pregnancy: A Critical Assessment of the Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) -- David M. Ayoub, M.D. F. Edward Yazbak, M.D -- ABSTRACT Influenza vaccination during all trimesters of pregnancy is now universally recommended in the United States. We critically reviewed the influenza vaccination policy of the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice (ACIP) and the citations that were used to support their recommendations. The ACIP’s citations and the current literature indicate that influenza infection is rarely a threat to a normal pregnancy. There is no convincing evidence of the effectiveness of influenza vaccination during this critical period. No studies have adequately assessed the risk of influenza vaccination during pregnancy, and animal safety testing is lacking. Thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative present in most inactivated formulations of the vaccine, has been implicated in human neurodevelopment disorders, including autism, and a broad range of animal and experimental reproductive toxicities including teratogenicity, mutagenicity, and fetal death. Thimerosal is classified as a human teratogen. The ACIP policy recommendation of routinely administering influenza vaccine during pregnancy is ill-advised and unsupported by current scientific literature, and it should be withdrawn. Use of thimerosal during pregnancy should be contraindicated. On May 28, 2004, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practice (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published its annual report on its current policy for prevention of influenza. The recommendation to vaccinate all pregnant women regardless of trimester was the most aggressive in a series of policy changes that began in 1995. Previously, influenza vaccine was advised only for women with preexisting medical conditions. The latest ACIP recommendation was promptly endorsed by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and theAmericanAcademy of Pediatrics (AAP). This investigation critically assesses the current ACIP recommendations, reviews the clinical research that supported them, and evaluates the risk-benefit analysis of administering inactivated influenza vaccine during pregnancy.

08/26/09 - Swine Flu Scare: It's All about The Adjuvant! -- Pandemic fears used as excuse to bypass safety and efficacy testing of patented adjuvants The U. S. government has paid pharmaceutical companies $7.9 billion* since 2004 to develop the capacity to mass vaccine the entire U.S. population by 2011. Under the perceived threat of H1N1, these plans have been accelerated to include the use of a non FDA approved chemical adjuvant suspected of causing Gulf War Syndrome, circumventing the FDA approval process for this potentially life threatening chemical. In 2005, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published a plan with two specific goals that relate to vaccines. The first goal was to have in place by 2011 domestic production capacity sufficient to supply vaccine to the entire U.S. population within six months of the onset of a pandemic. The second goal was to stockpile enough doses of vaccine to inoculate 20 million people as soon as possible after the onset of a pandemic.

06/12/09 - Companies urged to plan for H1N1 flu -- By Michael Kahn -- LONDON (Reuters) - Many multinational companies do not have workable plans in place for when a pandemic hits, including the possibility that H1N1 flu may change into a much more dangerous virus, health experts warned on Friday. Dr. Myles Druckman, disease outbreak expert at International SOS, also said working out how to respond to potential outbreaks that may hit offices of a multinational company in some locations but not others was something firms needed to contend with.

05/19/09 - The Voice of the White House -- It seems that an Israeli pharmaceutical company, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, one of the world?s largest with 28,000 employees located in 50 countries, bought out one Ivax Corporation that had labs in Mexico City. Teva has been working on finding vaccines and medicines for a host of different human ailments and took over the work of Ivax which also produced medicines and vaccines for human consumption but also did extensive experimental work in the veterinarian field.

05/14/09 - Scientist arrested for smuggling vials used in Ebola research into US -- OTTAWA (AFP) ? A Canadian scientist has been arrested for smuggling 22 vials stolen from Canada's National Microbiology Lab, used in Ebola and HIV research, into the United States, Canadian and US officials said Wednesday. Konan Michel Yao, 42, "was taken into custody" while crossing the border from Manitoba province into the western US state of North Dakota on May 5, said a spokeswoman for the Public Health Agency of Canada, which operates the lab. According to US prosecutor Lynn Jordheim, Yao was detained for carrying unidentified biological materials in vials wrapped in aluminium foil inside a glove and packaged in a plastic bag, along with electrical wires, in the trunk of his car.
