Controlling Tactical Nuclear Weapons
Tactical nuclear weapons represent the final frontier of nuclear arms control. Controlling US and Russian supplies would reduce the potential for nuclear terrorism, decrease the perceived threat to US allies and maintain momentum toward Obama’s goal of a world without nuclear weapons.

09/18/09 - Putin warns against Iran attack Iran's nuclear power plant at Bushehr Iran insists its nuclear programme is for peaceful civilian purposes Russian PM Vladimir Putin has warned against military action targeting Iran or imposing new sanctions to curb its nuclear programme. Iran's latest proposals on its nuclear ambitions have brought diverging views from the US and Russia. Earlier, a US official told the BBC that Washington was unhappy with the proposals, submitted on Wednesday. Correspondents say parties involved are making their positions clear ahead of the UN General Assembly this month. President Barack Obama has given Tehran until the end of September to respond to his friendlier overtures or face new sanctions. But the US and Israel have never ruled out the option of air strikes on Iran to stop it acquiring an atomic weapon.

Kommersant newspaper quoted "experts" as saying they believe a visit of this kind could have stemmed from urgent circumstances, "for example, in the event that Israel plans to attack Iran".

08/26/09 - Russian subs patrol off U.S. East Coast: officials -- by Adam Entous WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Two nuclear-powered Russian attack submarines have been patrolling off the eastern seaboard of the United States in the first mission of its kind so close to shore in nearly a decade, U.S. officials said on Wednesday. The Pentagon said it was not alarmed by the maneuvers, carried out by what officials described as Soviet-designed Akula-class submarines in international waters as little as 200 miles off the coast. The Russian operation comes at a time when President Barack Obama is pushing to "reset" relations between the two former Cold War rivals.

08/25/09 - Russia declassifies secret documents on Nazi-Soviet pact -- Russia has declassified top-secret surveillance documents in an attempt to justify its occupation of Eastern Europe under the Nazi-Soviet pact, signed 70 years ago on Sunday. The hidden protocols of the pact, in which Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler agreed to carve up Poland and other sovereign states, were denounced by the Soviet parliament in 1989, shortly after they were revealed for the first time.

07/10/09 - Obama Offers to Abandon Missile Shield for Russian Help With Iran -- President Makes Clear Oft Talked About Overture by Jason Ditz, July 07, 2009 -- During his visit to Moscow today, President Barack Obama made it clear that he was willing to abandon the controversial missile defense plan in Eastern Europe in return for Russian help in eliminating ?the threat? posed by Iran. ?I want us to work together on a missile defence architecture that makes us all safer. But if the threat from Iran?s nuclear and ballistic missile programmes is eliminated, the driving force for missile defence in Europe will be eliminated. That is in our mutual interest,? Obama insisted.

07/09/09 - President Obama Reaches Out to Russian Opposition -- By Peter Fedynsky Moscow -- U.S. President Obama framed his two-day visit to Moscow with an interview in the opposition Novaya Gazeta newspaper published the day of his arrival and meetings with representatives of Russian non-governmental organizations and Kremlin critics at the end. Novaya Gazeta is a newspaper known for its critical and investigative journalism. It also has the sad distinction of having had four of its journalists murdered for their work in recent years. Their unresolved killings are associated with concerns about the rule of law in Russia.

"The new President of the United States did not bring about any crucial changes in relation to Georgia, but having a dominant role in NATO he still insists on Georgia's soonest joining of the Alliance. The enemy is meeting like this as well."
