10/27/09 - 8 U.S. soldiers killed in Afghanistan -- Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- The U.S. military suffered another day of heavy losses in Afghanistan on Tuesday as roadside bombs killed eight soldiers, two military officials told CNN. An Afghan civilian working with NATO troops also was killed in the attacks in southern Afghanistan, the military said. The officials said that, according to initial reports, one blast took place just outside Kandahar and the other was in neighboring Zabul province.

An Air France passenger jet traveling from Rio de Janeiro to Paris disappeared and was presumed to have crashed after its electrical systems malfunctioned during a violent electric storm on Sunday evening. Officials said Monday that a search had begun for the wreckage in a vast swath of the Atlantic Ocean. Experts were at a loss to explain fatal damage to a modern jetliner from either lightning or turbulence, even that of a tropical storm.

01/14/10 - A global fiasco is brewing in Japan ---By Ambrose Evans-Pritchard Economics Last updated: January 12th, 2010 I have felt rather lonely after suggesting in my New Year Predictions that Japan is dangerously close to blowing up on its sovereign debts, with consequences that will be felt across the world. My intended point ? overly condensed ? was that 2010 will prove to be the year that Japan flips from deflation to something very different: the beginnings of debt monetization by a terrified central bank that will ultimately spin out of control, perhaps crossing into hyperinflation by the middle of the decade. So it is nice to have some company: first from PIMCO?s Paul McCulley, who said that the Bank of Japan should buy ?unlimited amounts? of long-term government debt (JGBs) to lift the country out of a ?deflationary liquidity trap? and raise the souffle again. His point is different from mine, in that he discerns deflation ?as far as the eye can see?. But in a sense it is the same point. Once a country embarks on such policies, the game is nearly up. The IMF says Japan?s gross public debt will reach 227pc of GDP this year. This is compounding at ever faster speeds towards 250pc by mid-decade.

 06/02/09 - Brazil says debris in Atlantic may be from missing Air France jet -- Reporting from Bogota, Colombia, and Sao Paulo, Brazil -- The Brazilian air force announced today it had located debris in the Atlantic Ocean that could be from an Air France jetliner that disappeared Sunday with 228 people on board. Brazilian government spokesmen said one of the many military aircraft involved in a search-and-rescue mission spotted a seat, an orange-colored buoy, a tank and a fuel slick about 400 miles northeast of Fernando de Noronha, an island off Brazil's coast.

09/18/09 - Putin warns against Iran attack Iran's nuclear power plant at Bushehr Iran insists its nuclear programme is for peaceful civilian purposes Russian PM Vladimir Putin has warned against military action targeting Iran or imposing new sanctions to curb its nuclear programme. Iran's latest proposals on its nuclear ambitions have brought diverging views from the US and Russia. Earlier, a US official told the BBC that Washington was unhappy with the proposals, submitted on Wednesday. Correspondents say parties involved are making their positions clear ahead of the UN General Assembly this month. President Barack Obama has given Tehran until the end of September to respond to his friendlier overtures or face new sanctions. But the US and Israel have never ruled out the option of air strikes on Iran to stop it acquiring an atomic weapon.

By Chikako Mogi TOKYO (Reuters) - Gold inched up toward $1,060 on Monday as the dollar fell to a 14-month low against the euro, but weak physical demand capped the upside for bullion. After hitting record highs above $1,070 per ounce on October 14, gold prices have traded in a narrow range, centering around $1,060, with support near $1,040. Gold has gained on the dollar's decline because a weaker dollar boosts investor interest in gold as a hedge and makes bullion cheaper for non-dollar holders, but buying momentum has lost some of its steam given weak jewelry demand and high prices spurring scrap sales. "Gold remains in an uptrend as long as the dollar is in a downtrend, but with physical demand weak, bullion lacks incentives to test new highs," said Koichiro Kamei, managing director at financial research firm Market Strategy Institute.

10/25/09 - NEDA: LTO's RFID illegal By Jess Diaz (The Philippine Star) Updated October 26, 2009 12:00 AM MANILA, Philippines - The controversial radio frequency identification (RFID) or ?spy chip? project of the Land Transportation Office (LTO) is illegal, according to the National Economic and Development Authority. NEDA Director General Augusto Santos told congressmen during the recent plenary debates on the 2010 national budget that such a project must be approved by his agency?s investment coordinating committee as required by regulations. Santos confirmed the statement of his predecessor, former economic planning secretary Ralph Recto, that NEDA did not pass upon the RFID plan as to its necessity and reasonableness of the fee that the public would have to shoulder because it was not submitted to the agency. He made the confirmation in answer to questions raised by Agusan del Sur Rep. Rodolfo Plaza, who vowed to question LTO?s RFID project even before the courts.

On the face of it, Net Neutrality appears to be a popular and fair proposal.
