06/12/09 - UPDATE: US Stocks Close Up; DJIA Turns Positive On 2009 -- By Rob Curran -- U.S. stocks rose Friday and the Dow Jones Industrial Average finished in positive territory for 2009 for the first time since January. The technology-heavy Nasdaq pared its gains for the week, however. Overall, the Dow rose 28.34 points, or 0.32%, to 8799.26, giving it a 0.26% gain for the year to date and its highest close since Jan. 6. The blue-chip measure gained 0.4% on the week - its 12th weekly advance in the last 14. The Dow has logged its biggest 14-week gain since 1975 in that span.

An Air France passenger jet traveling from Rio de Janeiro to Paris disappeared and was presumed to have crashed after its electrical systems malfunctioned during a violent electric storm on Sunday evening. Officials said Monday that a search had begun for the wreckage in a vast swath of the Atlantic Ocean. Experts were at a loss to explain fatal damage to a modern jetliner from either lightning or turbulence, even that of a tropical storm.

 06/02/09 - Brazil says debris in Atlantic may be from missing Air France jet -- Reporting from Bogota, Colombia, and Sao Paulo, Brazil -- The Brazilian air force announced today it had located debris in the Atlantic Ocean that could be from an Air France jetliner that disappeared Sunday with 228 people on board. Brazilian government spokesmen said one of the many military aircraft involved in a search-and-rescue mission spotted a seat, an orange-colored buoy, a tank and a fuel slick about 400 miles northeast of Fernando de Noronha, an island off Brazil's coast.

The enemy is meeting like this as well."

 05/27/09 - Make sure fingerprints exist before traveling the globe -- Most people give their fingerprints little thought, simply assuming they're at the tips of their hands where they belong. And if they're undergoing treatment for head and neck cancer, like a recent traveler to the United States, they have considerably more important things to worry about anyway. But that fingerprint assumption can make for a travel nightmare. A cancer patient from Singapore who was attempting to visit relatives in the United States was held up for four hours in customs because officials couldn't detect his fingerprints. His chemotherapy drug, capecitabine, had caused them to disappear.

 06/12/09 - Iran rivals both declare victory -- The two main candidates in Iran's presidential election have claimed victory, after extended voting as huge numbers of people turned out to vote. Reformist challenger Mir Hossein Mousavi told a news conference that he had won by a substantial margin. However, state media said incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had won, and electoral officials said partial results put him ahead on 69%.

UN investigators arrived in the Gaza Strip on Monday to probe alleged violations of international law during Israel's massive offensive against the Palestinian enclave. The 15-strong team entered the small coastal strip through the Rafah border crossing with Egypt and were met by UN officials in Gaza and a representative of the Islamist Hamas movement which rules the territory.

It could be next month or perhaps in September.
